Summary:
Technology is changing very rapidly and is evolving into a "must know" kind of skill. Our students today were born into a world where thousands of devices and technological innovations surround them daily. To be effective in the classroom we must incorporate technology to some extent in order to make learning meaningful and "real-life" for our students. The great thing about Web 2.0 tools is that they allows users to create images, videos, animations, and other output that helps them to showcase their thoughts and interests while proving that they understand various concepts. Web 2.0 tools are generally software applications that are user-centered and allow for user generated content. There are many tools available online. My suggestion is to go to Google and search key words such as "Web 2.0 in the classroom" or "Web 2.0 in education." See what you can find that pertains strictly to your subject area.
In this module, we have studied blogs, prezi, and wordle; these are just three of many tools availble to you online. Remember that blogs are websites used to record thoughts and ideas while hosting online discussions among a group of people. Blogs encourage critical thinking skills and collaboration among students. Images, videos, and other pesentations can be embedded or hosted on a blog.
Prezi is a tool that allows you as a teacher or students to create non-linear, user-paced presentations. Words and images can be grouped, sized, and animated to place emphasis on particular words, phrases, or images. Prezis are very creative and allow instructors (or students) hone in on exactly what they are trying to share while providing an opportunity for open-ended discussions.
Wordle is another tool that can be used in a creative way. Teachers and/or students can create word clouds with vocabulary that conveys an overall meaning. Word clouds are great ways to help students learn meanings within context and give them a chance to express their understanding with vocabulary.
